At the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi he was unable to defend the gold medal he won in the 500m four years earlier in Vancouver, finishing just off the podium in fourth place. He stopped training in the months that followed, and by the end of the year his weight had increased from 85kg to 107kg.
