CHANGE OF CLUB
In March 2022 he left his club of seven years, Team Jumbo-Visma, and switched to Team Reggeborgh. "I hesitated for a long time and postponed this choice for too long. I found it really difficult to say goodbye to the people at Jumbo-Visma, because I owe them a lot. It hurts to say that I'm going to be their competitor. But in the end I had to choose for myself because I was ready for something different. Working with coach Robin Derks at Reggeborgh suits me very well. I really like his approach. Very personal, actually. After each training session we talk for a while, he asks how I feel and together we look at what can be improved." FARMER
He works at his father's farm in Lekkerkerk, Netherlands, and spent much of his time there during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. "As farmers, we live with nature in all seasons and are constantly active in the open air: in winter, ice skating is part of that, I grew up with that. My passion outside speed skating is to go back to my parents' farm and work there and forget about skating and empty my mind for a bit. The farm is where I grew up and it's always been a safe space for me. I recently [speaking in 2020] bought a large piece of grassland for the company, close to our house. A nice investment, which I was able to make thanks to my prize money." (samsungmobilepress.com, 31 Jan 2022; isu.org, 10 Sep 2021; teamjumbovisma.com, 20 Mar 2021; ad.nl, 31 May 2020)
He has competed in marathon speed skating at national level and in roller speed skating at international level. (proskating.nl, 23 Oct 2014; patrickroest.nl, 01 Sep 2014)
