LIFE-CHANGING ACCIDENT
He required seven weeks rehabilitation and spent time in intensive care after he had an accident on his bicycle in May 2016, which he said changed his outlook on life. He returned to international competition in December 2016, but there had been a period during his recovery when he wondered if he would compete at an elite level again. "Athletes are healthy people but suddenly I was lying in a hospital bed not knowing what would happen next. I am an organised man, always trying to plan everything. And suddenly one event, a moment of misfortune, and instantly I could have lost everything. I came close to death, at least I felt. These events changed my perspective of looking at the world."
