MASS START AMBITION
In 2022 he left Team Jumbo-Visma and joined Team Reggeborgh as he believed the switch would help him to progress in the mass start event. "[Mass start] is not a primary goal at Jumbo. They are just super good at the 5000m and the 1500m. So I've had conversations about what's possible. I could focus a bit more on the long track, but the thing is that I really remained part of that marathon team. But I see for myself that if I want to go for that mass start, you need a few people around you who will guide you in it and do everything with you. Reggeborgh wants to set up a mass start branch, a kind of mass start team. And they really want to get started on that. In principle, that does not yet exist, so that is a risk, there are still many things uncertain. The marathon team is up, the sprint team is up, but things still have to happen. I want to make that mass start my speciality and get the most out of it." (schaatsen.nl, 15 Feb 2022)
