In January 2014 he was diagnosed with Graves' disease. The condition affects the thyroid gland and can result in fatigue and weight loss. He withdrew from the 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, but competed in the team pursuit. In December 2016 he underwent surgery to remove his thyroid gland.
