COACHING CONTROVERSY
In 2021 former Korean national short track coach, Cho Jae-Beom, was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison after he was found guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault. His jail term was extended to 13 years in December 2021. Allegations had first been made against Cho in 2018 by a number of Korean skaters, including Shim. In December 2021 Shim was banned from the national team by the Korea Skating Union after details of text messages she sent to Cho insulting her teammates during the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang were revealed during the coach's trial. Her suspension ran until February 2022 and covered the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
