    Previously an ice hockey player, he switched to short track after his mother read an article about the sport in the newspaper. He got some skates for his birthday, tried it out and liked it. "It is super cool and crazy fast. It reminded me of NASCAR. Also, after I saw Latvian speed skaters Evita Krievane and Haralds Silovs in training I thought it looked cool."
