In February 2022 he had 11 stitches in his left hand following a collision in the quarterfinals of the 1000m at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. He withdrew from the semifinal which was held on the same day, but returned to competitive action in the 1500m two days after the surgery.
