In February 2020 he returned to competition after 18 months out due to a series of issues. He struggled with an abdominal problem and underwent iliac artery surgery in July 2019. He also contracted malaria during a student trip to Kenya. He made his return to the ice at the 2020 World Cup event in Dresden, Germany.
