Her father comes from Aruba. "I'm more of a tropical person since my father comes from the Antilles. I used to go there when I was a kid. The family still lives there and now usually visits the Netherlands. If I don't run a good race, I don't think about it too long and just continue to skate. That's because of my Aruban background, I think. I'm just doing my best and then it will be fine. I don't worry so much." Her parents took her to a local ice hockey club. She then switched to speed skating and eventually short track. "I didn't want to shower with the boys [hockey team] anymore. Short track has more speed and it was more fun."
