I had a lot of energy and my mother wanted me to find a way to spend it outside the house so she asked me if I wanted to do a sport. There was a little lake beside our house, and I used to skate on it in hockey skates. When my mother asked me about which sport I wanted to do, I saw speed skating in a book and asked if that was like what I did on the lake. She said, 'Yes,' and so that's what I decided to do.
