As a child she was involved in figure skating, and would also go to the local rink with her father in her spare time. It was here that her potential was noticed by coach Nikolay Khvorostukhin, who suggested that she should try short track. Although she was initially reluctant, Khvorostukhin was persistent and eventually persuaded her to try the sport. "Suddenly, I found myself dragged to short track, and you fall in love with it quickly."
