Virtanen is a medical doctor (Ph.D.) after graduating end of 2015 and works part-time in the emergency room of the hospital of Peurunka in Finland. He got married to Alina Mayer (GER), a former competitive figure skater, in July 2016 and their daughter was born in January 2021. His wife is part of his coaching team. He splits his training time between Germany and Finland.
