Akalin competed in Singles and Pair Skating at the internatonal level before switching to Ice Dance. Coach Alper Ucar is the first Turkish Olympian in Ice Dance and coach John Kerr is the 2009 and 2011 European bronze medalist in Ice Dance, representing Great Britain.
