Buckland's older brother Nicholas competes at the World level in Ice Dance and is the 2014 European bronze medalist (with Penny Coomes). Coach Evgeni Platov is the 1994 and 1998 Olympic Ice Dance Champion (with Oksana Grishuk), competing for Russia. Coach Philip Askew was a National Ice Dance Champion and competed at the World level. Smart/ Buckland withdrew from 2015 European Championships before the Short Dance due to illness.
