Weiss started to skate quite late at age nine, after he watched his elder sister skate. His other sister was a World Junior diving champion (and Michael was also a regional diving champion), his father was a member of the 1964 Olympic Gymnastics Team and his mother was a national gymnastics champion. Weiss married his jazz dance coach and now choreographer Lisa Thornton in september 1997 and is a proud father of daughter Annie-Mae (born September 1998) and son Christopher Michael (born October 1999). Weiss was named 1999 Father of the Year by the National Fatherhood Initiative (USA). Weiss has landed quadruple Lutzes in practice. Weiss left long-time coach Audrey Weisinger to train with Laws after Skate America at the end of October 2002.
