Oster started skating at age 4 because she lived close to an ice rink. She has three brothers and one sister, and all of her brothers play golf and soccer. Sister Melanie is a gymnast. Her cousin competed on the pro tennis circuit for four years, and her uncles were nationally known bike racers in the 1950s and 1960s.
