Liu emigrated with his parents from China to Australia in 1994 and changed his first name from Yueming Liu. He represented China internationally under this name. Best result: 1993 Junior Worlds, 6th. Liu obtained Australian citizenship in August 1996. Liu was the first Australian skater to land a quadruple jump (quadruple toeloop at Australian Nationals 1998). He also landed a quadruple-triple toeloop combination at the Four Continents 1999 in Halifax.
