27 Feb 2025

The legacy of the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Games continues to inspire the next generation, and few embody that spirit more than Maia and Alex Shibutani. As Olympic bronze medalists and longtime advocates for Figure Skating, the “ShibSibs” have remained deeply involved in growing the sport worldwide. Their work with the Pyeongchang Legacy Foundation highlights their dedication to ensuring that the momentum of the Games doesn’t fade but instead fuels opportunities for young athletes. From their initial involvement with the local organizing committee in 2017 to their ongoing work today, they’ve witnessed firsthand how resources and programs continue to shape the future of winter sports in South Korea.

For Maia and Alex, Figure Skating has always been about more than just competition—it’s about connection. Skating together as siblings for over two decades, they’ve built a career on the foundation of shared experiences, passion, and storytelling on the ice. Now, their efforts off the ice reflect the same values, as they engage with young skaters, fostering a love for the sport and encouraging new generations to dream big. Returning to South Korea on the seven-year anniversary of their Olympic moment, the Shibutanis reaffirm their commitment to the sport that has given them so much, proving that true legacies aren’t just measured in medals but in the inspiration they leave behind. This video captures their efforts in action, showcasing their engagement with young skaters, workshops, and moments of mentorship that help build confidence and excitement for the sport.
