FIGURE SKATING
ISU European Champion Niina Petrokina is back
12 Jan 2026
The 2025 ISU European Champion Niina Petrokina is back! A year after her historic triumph when she became the first Estonian figure skater to win the European title, Petrokina will take the ice in Sheffield at the ISU European Championships and is about to make her Olympic debut in Milano Cortina.
Niina takes us back to the summer when she prepared for the Olympic season at a training camp in Austria and worked with choreographer Mark Pillay on her new “Criminal Tango” Short Program. She shows us the hard work, daily life and some off-ice fun with her teammates.
Petrokina did not have an easy start into the season. Hampered by an injury, she had to withdraw from her ISU Grand Prix events in the fall but she successfully defended her National title in December. Finally on the road to recovery, the Estonian skater is able to land the triple Lutz and flip jumps without pain and is looking forward to competing at the highest level again. Now all the hard work from the summer will pay off.
The 2025 ISU European Champion has overcome a life-threatening illness (aplastic anemia) and a broken leg on the way to her European title, showing an incredible resilience. Even at the most difficult times, Niina never lost her love for figure skating and she is certain that her sport has helped her to recover faster.
