Hase/Volodin win first European gold for Germany in 14 years in Tallinn
30 Jan 2025
Minerva Hase/Nikita Volodin (GER) struck the first gold for Germany in 14 years at the ISU European Figure Skating Championships 2025 in Tallinn (EST) Thursday.
The reigning ISU Grand Prix Final Champions skated off with the Pairs title and the first European gold for their country since Aliona Savchenko/Robin Szolkowy won the Pairs in Bern (SUI) in 2011.
The 2023 ISU European Champions Sara Conti/Niccolo Macii of Italy returned on to the podium to earn the silver medal while 2024 ISU European silver medalists Anastasia Metelkina/Luka Berulava of Georgia rose from ninth after the Short Program to capture the bronze medal.
Overnight leaders Hase/Volodin skated last and started off with an excellent triple twist. The combination consisting of a triple toe and two double Axels followed, but Hase singled the second Axel and stepped out of it.
Unfazed, the ISU Grand Prix Final Champions went on to complete a triple Salchow, throw triple loop and Salchow as well as difficult lifts, a pair combination spin and footwork. The German Champions scored 140.89 points and racked up 212.48 points to take the title.

“We are very happy that we won. After my mistake [on the jump combination] we were not sure about it and Sara [Conti] and Niccolo [Macii] skated also very well,” Hase said.
“We for sure felt the pressure today. We tried not to focus so much on it but it was on our mind. After the news in the morning from the USA it was mainly about being able to skate and to be here,” she added.
Volodin noted: “Today we didn’t want to think about scores, just concentrate maximally on the elements and everything else.
“After the little error on the combination you start thinking where you can catch up, what you can do. After the [triple] Salchow, I let go and we went on and were able to keep it together for the rest of the program, which was very important.
“Europeans is a very important competition for us and we need good results. But it was by far not our best today. We will have to work very, very hard to peak at the World Championships that are the qualifier for the Olympic Games,” he added.
Conti/Macii turned in a strong performance of their program to “Papa, Can You Hear Me” which was highlighted by a level-four triple twist, side by side triple Salchow, throw triple loop and Salchow. Only the second Axel was under-rotated. The Italians picked up 138.37 points - just below their personal best - and accumulated 206.89 points to take the silver.

“This is very emotional for both of us and very glad we were able to show our best,” Conti commented.
“There are several couples competing at the similar level at Europeans and there is so little between the top of the podium and being off the podium,” she continued.
“I loved skating this program,” Macii shared. “I am super happy to have won a silver medal at the European Championships. Two years ago we won with 194 points and now we are second with 206 as the level has risen and we need to be precise. We were able to score over 200 points the whole season and this is a huge achievement for us. We will continue this way.”
Metelkina/Berulava stood in ninth place after a sub-par Short Program but the Georgians refused to give up and fought back in the Free Skating to “A Necessary End”.
The ISU Grand Prix Final bronze medalists produced a triple twist, triple Salchow-double Axel-double Axel, throw triple flip and loop. The only glitch came when Metelkina stepped out of the triple toeloop. The reigning ISU World Junior Champions collected 134.85 points for a total of 191.88 points.

“It was very hard for us but we are very happy that we were able to pull ourselves together and show almost the maximum of what we can do. It is unexpected for us to be on the podium but last night I did think maybe we can get third,” Berulava said.
Maria Pavlova/Alexei Sviatchenko (HUN) slipped from third to fourth place after she missed the throw triple flip. They were edged out of the podium by less than half a point (191.44 points). Anastasia Vaipan-Law/Luke Digby (GBR) finished fifth on 183.76 points. Two-time ISU European medalists Rebecca Ghilardi/Filippo Ambrosini (ITA) came sixth (180.86 points).
