2023 ISU European Champion Anastasiia Gubanova (GEO) came out on top in a Women’s Short Program that saw some spectacular performances at the ISU European Figure Skating Championships 2025 in Tallinn (EST) Wednesday.

The result of the Women’s Short Program could not have been much closer: 2024 ISU European silver medalist Gubanova edged Estonia’s Niina Petrokina and Kimmy Repond of Switzerland by less than half a point. Going into Friday's Free Skate, the top three skaters are virtually tied.

Performing to an epically dark version of “Money, Money”, the Georgian nailed a triple flip-triple toe, double Axel, triple Lutz and three level-four spins to earn 68.99 points.

The 2023 ISU European Champion was relieved to show this performance after having some struggles earlier this season in the Short Program.

“Unfortunately it was a hard season and all the time I was unfortunate but am happy that I was able to pull myself together here and do the best,” Gubanova noted.

“This [close Short Program] result is interesting and great. I think I should let today go, take a deep breath, have a good practice tomorrow and go into the long program with a cool head and do what we all know how to do.”

When Petrokina took the ice, the home crowd cheered loudly and roared even louder as she landed a double Axel, triple Lutz-triple toe combination and a triple flip. The Estonian Champion produced difficult spins and footwork as well to post a new personal best score of 68.94 points.

“I was very nervous and I knew I would be and this time I took these nerves with me and we skated together and it helped me to do my best,” Petrokina shared.

Her plan for the day in between the Short Program and Friday’s Free Skating is clear: “First I have to calm down, to eat, sleep, sleep well, and train again and go for the free program,” she said.

“[Being in the top three after the Short Program] is something new but I agree with Anastasiia [Gubanova] -  this medal is today but we need to work more tomorrow and on Friday, just go and do our job as always.”

Repond had been drawn to skate last out of the 31 Skaters. Dressed in a breathtaking light blue dress covered in rhinestones, the 2023 ISU European bronze medalist opened her program to “Mother Nature” with a triple flip-triple toe and followed up with a triple flip and double Axel. The Swiss Champion achieved a personal best of 68.68 points.

“I was a bit more nervous than usual, so I am really happy that I skated the skate I wanted to show, almost, because there was a little hesitation after the flip, but other than that I'm really happy with how I did,” Repond commented.

“I am super happy with the points and to be on the podium with the short. Of course, I want to stay on the podium. I will be happy when I skate a clean program and stay on the podium.”

The 2024 ISU European bronze medalist Nina Pinzarrone (BEL) turned in another excellent performance to a modern version of “Swan Lake” and remains in medal contention on 66.80 points. Lara Naki Gutmann (ITA) follows in fifth on 63.79 points with her innovative routine to “Squid Game”. Italian Champion Anna Pezzetta rounds out the top six at 62.73 points.
